Powhatan Algonquian Intertribal Roundtable

Kenah (Thank you)!
The intertribal roundtable includes representatives from the eight Powhatan Algonquian speaking tribes in Virginia. The roundtable, also known as the Powhatan Algonquian Intertribal Roundtable (PAIR), has been working toward a long-term language program since 2021. This work includes support and guidance from Ian Custalow (Mattaponi), Kenah Consulting, and professional linguists with extensive experience working on Powhatan and related languages.
Vision
To be one with our ancestors, by awakening the art of communication in a meaningful and
intentional direction that will never sleep again.
Mission
To create and develop a sustainable Algonquian Language Fluency Program that will preserve
and empower the continuation of past and present traditions of the Powhatan culture made
possible by relentlessly educating, motivating, inspiring, encouraging, and supporting tribal
citizens, youth, and the community at large to learn, interact, and utilize our language.
Value
The study of the Algonquian Language and Powhatan culture are a gateway of greater
understanding and appreciation for our coastal Algonquian tribes where our language and
heritage are supported through teamwork and sustained in a respectful community.
